Salon & Spa Tipping Guide
Beauty and wellness services are personal and hands-on, so percentage tips at the higher end of the US range are customary. Tip on the full, pre-discount price of the service — if you use a coupon or gift card, base the tip on what the service normally costs. Cash is always welcome, but most salons let you add gratuity to a card.

Do you tip the salon owner?
The old rule that “you never tip the owner” has largely faded. Many owners now happily accept tips, and 20% for great service is a kind norm. If you’re unsure, you can ask discreetly or simply tip as you would anyone else — it will rarely be refused, and a generous review helps an owner-operated business either way.
How to split tips among multiple providers
When several people work on you — say an assistant shampoos and a stylist cuts, or a colorist and a stylist both contribute — tip each according to their role. A simple approach is to tip the lead provider 20% and hand the assistant a few dollars directly. At the front desk, ask if you can split the gratuity between team members on the receipt.
Tipping on discounts, packages and gift cards
Base your tip on the full regular price of the service, not the discounted amount. If a $100 facial is $70 with a promotion, a 20% tip is $20, not $14. For prepaid packages, tip at each visit as if paying full price. This keeps the provider’s effort — which doesn’t change with your coupon — fairly rewarded.
